The Breath is the Bridge — A Simple Breathing Practice

The breath is the only autonomic function we can consciously control. That makes it the most powerful tool we have for moving between states — from fear to calm, from scatter to coherence, from separation to presence.

In fifty years of yoga practice across four traditions, thirty years of Tai Chi, and decades of shamanic work, I have found that the breath is always the beginning. Before intention. Before journeying. Before healing. The breath arrives first.

Here is a simple practice I return to again and again:

Sit comfortably. Close your eyes. Place your left hand on your heart and your right hand on your belly.

Breathe in slowly through your nose for a count of four — feel your belly rise first, then your chest. Hold gently for a count of two. Exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of six — let the belly fall, then the chest soften. Pause for a count of two. Repeat.

As you breathe, ask each of the Three Brains to come present: Body — I feel you. Heart — I feel you. Mind — I feel you. On the exhale, let any tension in any of the three release.

Five cycles of this breath will shift your state. Ten cycles will change your day. A daily practice will change your life.

The breath is not a technique. It is a homecoming.
